FIBA was founded on 18th June 1932 in Geneva, Switzerland. We therefore start our 75th Anniversary celebrations today and would like to invite you all to celebrate it with us.
The visionary men who met on that summer day of 1932 in Geneva would have probably never imagined, not even in their wildest dreams, how popular the game of basketball has become 75 years later. Basketball is amongst the most popular sports in the world and truly conforms one of the pillars of the Olympic movement.
Compared to the other international big governing bodies, we are still a young sports federation. However, our game has conquered the world in breathtaking speed. Just keep in mind that we became an Olympic Sport only four years after our creation. By remembering our roots and rich history we realize how much the world has changed since our early days. New challenges are lying ahead of us and the sports world has become increasingly competitive. We cannot rest on our laurels and must look ahead without forgetting our values and principles.
It is in this context that we see the celebrations of the 75th Anniversary – it is a perfect occasion to celebrate good times, but it is also an opportunity to further promote our sport. In the year lying ahead of us we would like to encourage all basketball fans to celebrate with us in organising certain activities - may they be friendly games, youth programs or any other actions - to contribute to this important festivity. Because after all this anniversary is yours - the anniversary of the people who love and practice the sport of basketball all over the world!
