  • 2011-12 PBA PHILIPPINE CUP CONFERENCE FORMAT

Published on October 6, 2011

Self-described rabid PBA followers Martin Camacho and Joey Diaz from Muntinlupa would like to know
the Groupings and the format of the ongoing Philippine Cup.

Be reminded that the groupings are only to determine which teams will meet once or twice in the
eliminations. All 10 teams are bunched together in a single group as far as team standings are
concerned.

A. ELIMINATIONS ROUND – 10 Teams: 14 games each

The INTER-INTRA format will be followed in the Eliminations wherein the ten (10) teams will be
divided into two (2) groups and each team will play its groupmates once and the teams in the other
group twice. The two (2) groups will be as follows:

GROUP A GROUP B
B-Meg Llamados Alaska Aces
Barangay Ginebra Kings Barako Bull Energy
Petron Blaze Boosters Meralco Bolts
Powerade Tigers Shopinas.com Clickers
Rain or Shine Talk ‘N Text

B. QUARTERFINALS - EIGHT (8) TEAMS: Twice-to-beat/Best-of-Three

The top eight (8) teams at the end of the Eliminations Round based on their cumulative win-loss
records qualify for the QUARTERFINALS, as follows (while the last placed teams (9th and 10th) get
eliminated):

QF1: No. 1 team vs. No. 8 team
QF2: No. 2 team vs. No. 7 team
Note: 1st and 2nd placed teams with twice-to-beat advantage

QF3: No. 3 team vs. No. 6 team
QF4: No. 4 team vs. No. 5 team
Best-of-three

C. SEMIFINALS - FOUR (4) TEAMS: Best-of-Seven

Winners in the QUARTERFINALS will figure in a Best-of-Seven Series, as follows:

SF1: QF1 winner vs. QF4 winner
SF2: QF2 winner vs. QF3 winner

D. FINALS - Best-of-Seven

The winners of the two (2) Best-of-Seven Semifinal Series shall play a Best-of-Seven Final Series
for the Championship and First Runner Up positions.

RESOLUTION OF TIES

A. ELIMINATIONS – only the 2nd and 8th positions will be broken via play-off and there will only
be a single playoff for one position. All other rankings will be resolved via the PBA quotient.

USING PBA QUOTIENT - ONLY THE SCORES OF THE GAMES OF THE TEAMS INVOLVED IN TIE(S) SHALL BE
CONSIDERED -- DIVIDE THE TOTAL POINTS SCORED IN FAVOR BY THE TOTAL POINTS SCORED
AGAINST.

If teams are still tied after using the PBA quotient, they shall go through the following order of
tie breakers until the tie(s) is(are) broken, which are as follows:

i. Win-Loss record between the tied teams.
ii. Via the quotient of all their games played in the Eliminations.
iii. If still tied, toss of coin will determine placings.

1. In the event of a two (2) way tie for 2nd position, the two teams playoff: The winner takes 2nd
position and earns twice-to-beat advantage in the Quarterfinals.

2. In the event of a three (3) way tie for 1st , 2nd and 3rd positions, the team with the superior
quotient automatically takes 1st spot. The two (2) teams with the inferior quotients playoff for the
2nd position. The winner takes 2nd position and earns twice-to-beat advantage in the Quarterfinals.
The loser shall take 3rd position.

3. In the event of a two (2) way tie for 8th position, the two teams playoff: The winner takes 8th
position and qualifies to the Quarterfinals.

4. In the event of a three (3) way tie for 7th, 8th and 9th positions, the team with the superior
quotient automatically takes 7th spot. The two (2) teams with the inferior quotients playoff for the
8th position. The winner takes 8th position and qualifies to the Quarterfinals. The loser shall be
eliminated.

5. In the event of a three (3) way tie for 8th, 9th and 10th positions, the team with the superior
quotients will slug it out for the 8th position. The winner takes 8th position and qualifies to the
Quarterfinals`. The loser and the team with the most inferior quotient shall be eliminated.

6. Any other tie(s) that are not specifically mentioned above shall be similarly resolved via the
PBA QUOTIENT and/or PLAYOFFS as the Commissioner may determine.
